Current Management System is Bad for Fish, Fishermen and Taxpayers- Nick Gaydos [ 5/21/2003 - 10:04 ] # In the report released Wednesday, Horrors of the Deep: Chilling Tales of Denial, Conflict of Interest and Mismanagement of America’s Ocean Resources, the Mid-Atlantic Council is highlighted for its decision to turn its back on recreational fishermen and bluefish recovery.
"When recreational fishermen – hoping to help rebuild the devastated bluefish population more quickly – volunteered to release 70 percent of their catch, the Mid Atlantic Council was presented with a golden opportunity to promote stewardship and support a plan that would speed up bluefish recovery."
"Instead, the council chose to punish, rather than reward recreational fishermen’s good faith efforts to rebuild bluefish, and transferred unused recreational bluefish quota to dramatically increase the annual quota for the commercial fishery."
