Bloomfield Hills man steers boat to victory in Mackinac race

  #
The Natalie J, skippered and owned by cosmetic dentist Phil O’Niel III of Bloomfield Hills, was the winner of its class in the Pure Michigan Bayview Mackinac Boat Race from Port Huron to Mackinac.

The Natalie J crossed the finish line at Mackinac Island just before midnight Sunday, about six hours after the 80-foot Beau Geste of Hong Kong, according to official race results.

A member of Detroit’s Bayview Yacht Club for more than 30 years, O’Niel was “elated” as his crew of 13 completed the Cove Island Course covering 254 nautical miles.

“I go in expecting to win,” said O’Niel, whose office is at 1579 W. Big Beaver, Suite B-6, Troy.

He’s a veteran of 33 Mackinac races.   more...
