Portland Pudgy

BoatingLocal recently met with David Hulbert, designer of the Portland Pudgy, and got a personal tour of his clever and potentially lifesaving little boat.

The Pudgy is a 7’ 8” double-hulled dinghy with foam flotation and a laundry list of features. The vessel can be rowed, towed, sailed or powered by a 2 hp outboard. The hull is self-bailing, unsinkable and features handholds on the bottom for righting the vessel after a capsize. more...

Nineteen Lake Michigan beaches in Indiana noted on beach pollution list

Nineteen Indiana beaches on Lake Michigan are suffering from high bacteria levels, according to the Beach Guard pollution monitoring system.

Beaches impacted currently are in Lake, LaPorte and Porter counties. Many beaches become contaminated after heavy storms wash contaminants on streets and other surfaces, in sanitary sewers, and from septic systems.  more...

Two Lessons for Sailing.

Well, I don’t know where to start. The last two weekends have both had some good lessons to teach us out on our Precision 23. Both lessons remind us to be careful and alert. The first one brought home the message about informing passengers about their different roles in a given circumstance. It also gave us a chance to practice our man-overboard techniques, which I’m sorry to report need more practice. Fortunately I only lost my treasured Hooper’s Yachts cap in the ordeal. As I said, the take home lesson was that the crew should be informed beforehand and not during the situation of their tasks.  more...
