Cormorants gobbling up perch- Editor H2ONotes [ 6/2/2010 - 06:18 ] # Cormorants have an insatiable appetite for perch and walleye, and just
about any other species of fish they can find in shallow waters from
inland lakes to the Great Lakes. "They have become detrimental to the
fish population and have become a nuisance animal," said a resident who
lives on Lake St. Clair. more...

Port authority says bye, bye birdies- Editor H2ONotes [ 4/13/2010 - 19:59 ] # Hundreds of double-crested cormorants will have
to find a new nesting place when the Hamilton Port Authority turns an
artificial island into an underwater shoal next fall.
Plans are to make the 30-by-35-metre Farr Island disappear by
spreading out the crushed rock with which it was built until it
disappears beneath the waves. More stone will then be added to expand
the resulting shoal to create a spawning bed for lake herring,
whitefish, smallmouth bass, walleye and other warm-water fish species. more...

Stitching a security blanket for the common tern- Editor H2ONotes [ 4/13/2010 - 19:53 ] #
Ten years ago, conservationists tried a novel experiment to protect the
common tern, a threatened native bird on the St. Lawrence River. The
tern’s nesting habitat was getting overrun by gulls and geese. So a
group of people sort of faked that habitat on the Seaway's giant
navigation buoys, known as nav cells. more...

destination for bird watching enthusiasts, due to its combination of
unique habitat and positioning along major migratory routes for many
species. Spring is a particularly exciting time to watch the skies along
the shore, as this time of year brings the return of the raptors.
Starting in March and continuing through May, a wide variety of birds of
prey, including Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, Broad-winged Hawks and
many others, can be seen making their way north along the eastern shore. more...

Wolves on the move- Editor H2ONotes [ 3/30/2010 - 07:15 ] # Wolves showing up in the Lower Peninsula always seemed inevitable. With

On the cougar trail- Editor H2ONotes [ 3/22/2010 - 06:57 ] # LANSING - Few issues addressed by the Department of Natural Resources
and Environment in recent years have been as controversial as cougars. Also
known as mountains lions or pumas, cougars are large felines that once
roamed much of Michigan. The last record of a wild cougar being taken in
Michigan came from Newberry in 1906. The species was thought to be
extirpated. Reports of cougar sightings have occurred
intermittently since then, however, and have multiplied in recent years.
The department has set up a four-person team to investigate and respond
to reported cougar sightings. more...

Ring-billed gulls' return is one sure sign that spring is on the way- Editor H2ONotes [ 3/2/2010 - 06:41 ] # Throughout this winter, the constant theme has been
the lack of birds. Birders, however, are eternally optimistic. There's
always tomorrow, or next week, or next season, or next year. Each season
brings anticipation of a possible good sighting.
Even the snow which fell Monday night has meant more birds at
backyard feeders this morning. more...
