Area cruisers answer call of distant ports- Editor H2ONotes [ 9/8/2010 - 06:50 ] # Aided by technology, some local sailing enthusiasts have made distant
ports their destination when leaving Rochester and wandering out onto
the lake. They call themselves "cruisers," and for them the
getting-there is as important as the journey's end. more...

Good Afternoon MC Skippers :- Editor H2ONotes [ 9/8/2010 - 06:41 ] # Just 30 days away till what should be our biggest, toughest MC
Scow Championship of the year. I have been sailing in the MC class
since the early 80s and every year it just keeps getting better and
better. The growth, the strength and the fun of our class is a
testimony to it's structure and all the people who have believed in plus
given back to this class. Ultimately it is a testimony to
the builder and the Melges family. moreSailing | | |
Setting sail for new horizons- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/31/2010 - 05:40 ] # This schoolhouse rocks, mostly because it's floating on water. The
Spirit of Buffalo, a 73-foot-long topsail schooner that makes its home
in the Erie Canal Harbor Commercial Slip, has been hosting disadvantaged

APS Spinsheet Chesapeake Racer Profile - Dave Askew- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/26/2010 - 07:45 ] # The following is the September APS Chesapeake Racer Profile, a monthly hi-light in Spinsheet Magazine (written by Molly Winans):
Although
he's a sailor who sets the bar higher than most, APS Racer Profile
alumnus Dave Askew had a summer of remarkable Great Lakes racing that
leaped beyond his expectations. Askew’s team won its class in the IRC
Great Lakes Championships, the 280-mile Bayview Port Huron to Mackinac
Race, the 333-mile Chicago YC Mackinac Race (overall winner), and the
Ugotta at the Traverse City YC. “I’ve always wanted to go back there and
sail these races in my own boat,” says Askew. “I didn’t expect to win
everything.” more...

Sailing at CORK, in Kingston, Ontario- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/19/2010 - 07:29 ] #
Kingston, Ontario has a number of claims to fame: a brief stint as a
colonial capital, the home of prestigious universities, and a massive,
limestone penitentiary that opened back in 1835.
Wind is another resource - one that brought windmills to near-by Wolfe Island in the last few years. more...

Silvaplana from a nice warm computer- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/19/2010 - 07:27 ] # Back to more about the GOOD of the NAs: Lake Michigan was about 74 degrees (23 degrees Celsius). Little Traverse Bay is favored with a reliable sea breeze from 270 around 1200 (or a bit later,) and a choice of sailing close to the shore or south of Harbor Point. The only drawback (though certainly not from the sailor's perspective, but that of the RC) is the deep water. We were sailing in water about 100 feet (30 meters) deep. The depths at the shorelines are such that there's little chance of running aground; besides, the crystal clear water easily allows you to see the shelving. more...

SLAM Kiwi Match - Shaky Chicago- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/19/2010 - 07:10 ] # It was another case of close but not quite
close enough for SLAM Kiwi Match in Chicago. It came down to the last
couple of hours of racing on Sunday afternoon but unfortunately the
shifts didn't quite go our way; and boy, they were some serious shifts! Things were looking a bit shaky on the Saturday afternoon for the Chicago Match Race Centre to complete a full programme of racing. After several futile attempts in a light fickle breeze to hold the second round robin it was decided to send everyone ashore and a new plan was developed for Sunday, weather permitting. Fortunately the weather mostly played along on Sunday and a wise decision to hold quarter finals instead of a full second round robin was made. This was a great decision for us as a slow start in the first round robin meant we would have struggled to make the top 4 without a full second round robin. more...

Making sailing look like a breeze- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/17/2010 - 07:50 ] # On one recent Wednesday race evening when the sky was still clear and
blue, the wind blew so lightly that Charlie Obersheimer was using his
thinnest, biggest sail to catch as much breeze as he could.
With
sunglasses, a cap and a tan, he looked like the stereotype of a
yachtsman as he leaned, the stainless steering wheel gleaming in the sun
as he turned. His Aires was one of about 80 white-sailed boats
that filled the horizon, circling a bobbing orange buoy. It marked the
start of the five-mile Lake Erie course for this weekly Buffalo Harbor
Sailing Club race, just beyond the breakwater near the Buffalo Yacht
Club on Porter Avenue. more...

E Scow ILYA Champs Wrap Up- Editor H2ONotes [ 8/16/2010 - 07:09 ] # The first part of the annual ILYA “Big Inland”
was completed over 3 days and 4 light, hot and bumpy races. The first
day of racing for the E Scows was cancelled due to no wind and with the
heat index climbing into the low 100′s, many of the competitors took to
taking a dip in the lake every 15-20 minutes to keep the core body temp
into the normal ranges. And with the outside bar at LGYC luring many of
the sailors throughout most of the day, it was a welcome relief when the
final call was made at 4pm so the beer could really start flowing. more...
