Stranded Lake Erie boaters grateful for towing service

  #
Captain Neil Lundell spotted the stalled fishing boat bobbing in 50 feet of water off Shades Beach.
He dropped the engine RPM on his towboat and pulled near. Lundell eased close enough to joke with the boater about his misfortune. But he didn't say a word.

Instinctively, he read the 12-mph breeze and the 2-foot waves that rocked Terry Nicholson's 21-foot Sylvan Offshore motorboat. Lundell pulled into position nearby, just upwind. more...

Boat tricks for team partners

  #
Skeeter FX Series with Yamaha SHO motorWinning two-man ("buddy") tournaments involves more than hooking and landing fish.

It's about teamwork, time management, and proper use of the boat.

No one knows that better than Alabama pro Russ Lane, who had a great deal of success fishing team tournaments before turning pro.

"Most team anglers just go fishing, but the successful ones have a system in place that makes them more efficient, and ultimately more successful," he says.  more...

Glastron Goes to Cadillac, Michigan

  #
They are building Glastron boats in Michigan now. A DS 205 deck boat was the first Glastron to roll off an assembly line in Cadillac, where the brand formerly built in Minnesota now shares a production facility with Four Winns and Wellcraft. The three brands make up the Recreational Boat Group division of Project Boat Holdings, which also acquired Ranger, Champion, and Stratos in the wake of the bankruptcy last year of Genmar.   more...

A Dream Day, a Dose of Reality

  #
As the Eleanor P, our new Seaward 26RK, slipped away from its temporary slip in Stuart last December, the gimpy old man at the helm was busy watching out for a harbor-full of holiday boaters, a string of unfamiliar channel markers, and a seemingly endless flotilla of UFO's (unidentified floating objects). What a beautiful morning for our first test run.  more...

Business suddenly blossoms for struggling boat builder

  #

DELAND -- As the 2009 Miami International Boat Show approached, John and Robin Cosker found themselves in a bind.

Their business, Mystic Powerboats, was in trouble, and the economic environment held little promise for a company building racing boats that sold for $3 million to $4 million apiece.

"We closed the week before the Miami boat show," John Cosker said. "We realized we had to sell a boat at the show to survive. And we sold one."

That order carried the company through the first half of 2009, and, in June, business picked up significantly. Through the remainder of the year, Mystic set a company record, selling and/or delivering six boats. The company usually built two or three a year, Cosker said.  more...

Your Propeller - the unsung hero of boating

  #
Doesn't a propeller look simple? Visually, the size and shape makes it obvious that a propeller kind of 'screws' its way through the water and to a casual observer, it looks to be one of the simplest parts on the whole boat.

Well, it’s exactly the opposite. Your propeller is the unsung hero of boating. It’s probably the single most complex
piece of engineering on the boat. The size and shape of the blades and their angle to the hub are just the start of the story.  more...

River, lock businesses fear fallout of canal's closing

  #

Canal fallout

If locks and dams in Chicago-area waterways are closed to keep Asian carp from Lake Michigan where it could devastate the Great Lakes' ecology, there would be an immediate effect on local boating businesses and could forever change a way of life on inland rivers and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

"If they close the river, my business would die," said Anthony Discepolo, 52, owner of A-1 Millennium Marina, which sits on the Little Calumet River in Burnham. "The impact would be horrendous. Boaters don't want to be restricted to just the river."   more...

Evinrude Helps U.S. Marines Step Off the Gas

  #

Evinrude's 55 MFE JetOur Outboard Expert, Charles Plueddeman, sent me this news item last night, which describes Evinrude’s new multi-fuel outboard. Long-time readers may remember that Charles wrote about military-spec outboards for Boats.com last year. Although built to military specs, I wonder if the fact you can purge it of water after submersion might make it of interest to those recreational mariners who occasionally swamp their boats at the dock.   more...

Earning the Dream

  #

charter1We've all heard the old saw about boats being floating cash disposals; the ownership experience akin to shredding $100 bills while standing in a shower. But despite our humorous complaints, we love our boats and consider the investment to be money well-spent. In fact, many of us would like to have even more funds to lavish on our favorite obsession. That's where I found myself recently when contemplating a purchase I'd always figured was still 10 years away.  more...
