Discover the deep blue

  #
The bubbles appeared first. Then, the bright yellow oxygen tank strapped to Tim Brown's back. Then, finally, the 61-year-old broke the surface of the St. Clair River, his salt-and-pepper beard soaked, his head covered in a wetsuit.

Brown, of Port Huron, is an avid scuba diver, making dozens of dives a week in the river and southern Lake Huron.

"I only come up here on days that end in 'y'," he said with a laugh.

He loves diving in the area for many reasons.

"There's clear water. Wrecks. You don't have to spend all day on a boat. You just suit up and jump in."   more...

It is difficult to think of northern Michigan without also thinking about the Great Lakes. These waters are vital to our economy and are relied upon by 45 million people for drinking water, fishing, recreation, agriculture, industry and shipping.  more...

10,000 boaters party at Jobbie Nooner

  #

Harrison Township -- Few problems were reported Friday, despite massive crowds and gallons of alcohol that descended on Gull Island for the annual Jobbie Nooner boating party.

Lt. Dennis Maurey, who oversees marine patrols for the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, said Friday evening that upward of 10,000 people and some 4,000 boats were anchored for this year's celebration.

Beads, bikinis and beer were prevalent, but police said they made no arrests Friday at the sometimes rowdy event. One man was transported to a hospital for intoxication and a couple of others suffered minor injuries, Maurey said.   more...

Marquette, Mich., a Superior destination

  #
Outdoorsy and artsy Marquette, Mich., was "Fan Favorite" among the National Trust's Distinctive Destinations. The exhibit at the Marquette County History Museum tried to dispel any misperception of "yoopers" as uneducated people. In fact, according to "Anatomy of a Yooper," literacy rates in Marquette, the best-known city in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, are higher than the state average.

Curious, I asked a guest at a cocktail party in the northern Michigan college town whether she considered herself a yooper, the word often used to describe Upper Peninsula residents. "Of course," she said. "We're proud of it." more...
