its way of life. Yet the gatekeepers believe the threat really
isn’t that big of a
deal, that closing the gates against the horde would hurt the
gatekeepers’ pocketbook. We can all see what will happen in this
story. The horde will run
through the open gate and destroy the town. more...

Offshore wind turbines promise jobs and prosperity, but ...- Editor H2ONotes [ 3/22/2010 - 17:43 ] # Forty-story wind turbines sprouting in Lake Michigan could be seen as
blight on postcard sunsets or symbols of a sustainable future for
Michigan. The view may depend on which dog you have in the fight. But
more than most, this question vexes long-time environmental activists. more...

Port Huron obeys rules at high cost- Editor H2ONotes [ 3/22/2010 - 06:59 ] # If you're looking for a case study that might explain why so many people
are so mistrustful of government, look no further than the sewers of
Detroit and Port Huron. Or, to be more precise, look no further than
what comes out of those sewers.
Detroit is the No. 1 source of sewage pollution in the Great Lakes. Last
year, it spewed more than 31 billion gallons of filth into the Rouge
and Detroit rivers.
So-called "combined sewers" are the problem. Many of the city's storm
sewers drain into its sanitary sewers. When it rains or when the snow
melts, the system is quickly overwhelmed. Treatment facilities cannot
handle the flood of storm runoff and sewage. more...

it's nice to hear a little good news.

What Would the Niagara River Look Like Without an Ice Boom?- Editor H2ONotes [ 3/10/2010 - 16:01 ] # As my dog and I walked on Squaw Island on a chilly afternoon last month,
I was able to get an up close look at the Niagara River. At that spot,
nearly twenty percent of the world's fresh surface water flows from the
four upper Great Lakes, funnels together and eventually flow over the
Falls and than onto Lake Ontario. With the significance of this location
in mind, I considered the consequences of clogging up the point where
Lake Erie meets the Niagara River with a man-made ice boom. more...
